The advantage of using fillers to enhance beauty is obvious. Results are almost instantaneous in most cases, aside from some occasional minor bruising that disappears in a few days. Most times you go into an aesthetic clinic for, say, a lip augmentation job, and come out in less than a half hour with your lips nicely plumped up and feel and look ten times sexier (although a little bit poorer – but then again, it is worth it).

An obvious advantage of using the filler that has local anesthetic incorporated is that this eliminates the trouble of having to provide local anesthetic whether one is using ice packs, anesthetic gel, or injecting into the various nerve block fields, and running the chance of temporarily altering the architecture of the face to the extent of being unable to work well with a swollen environment.

The procedure is simple. At the initial consultation, the patient’s face is assessed to see the extent of the fold, and to assess how much Juvaderm is needed. General health is assessed to ensure the patient can tolerate the injection, and that there will be no complications due to the injection such as excessive bleeding in persons with bleeding disorders. The procedure is usually done under local anesthetic.

One hour before the procedure, liberal amounts of local anesthetic gel are applied to the nasolabial fold, and an occlusive plastic wrap is applied to the gel to aid local skin absorption of the anesthetic gel. Some doctors prefer to give a local anesthetic injection to the nerve supply of the cheek (the infraorbital nerve) through the mucosa of the mouth to ensure better anesthesia.

The solution to the above problems was once only surgery. The insertion of a silastic prosthesis solved the problem of flat noses. However with surgery there were disadvantages. Among these were anesthetic risks, infection, bleeding and the like.
